No technical climbing — but a real challenge

Kilimanjaro is a trek, not a technical climb: there are no ropes or ice axes on the standard routes. The real challenge is altitude. That's why route choice and the number of days matter so much — more time on the mountain gives your body time to acclimatise and greatly improves your chances of reaching the summit.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need to climb Kilimanjaro?

Most climbers take 6 to 8 days. Longer itineraries allow better acclimatisation and higher summit success.

Do I need climbing experience for Kilimanjaro?

No technical experience is needed on the standard routes, but you should be in good health and reasonably fit. Training with long hill walks helps a lot.

What is the easiest route up Kilimanjaro?

No route is truly easy because of the altitude. Longer routes such as Lemosho or the Northern Circuit feel more comfortable because they give your body more time to adjust.

What is included in a Kilimanjaro climb?

Typically park fees, licensed guides, porters, a cook, meals on the mountain, camping equipment and transfers. Every Gallop quote lists exactly what's included.
