A park of many landscapes
Within a short drive, Lake Manyara takes you from tall, spring-fed forest full of blue monkeys and baboons to open floodplains and the edge of the alkaline lake. The Rift Valley wall rises dramatically behind it all, making Manyara one of the most scenic parks in Tanzania.
Highlights
- Elephants and big troops of olive baboons in the groundwater forest.
- Tree-climbing lions — a behaviour Manyara is famous for, although sightings are rare and never guaranteed.
- Birdlife including pelicans, storks and, in some seasons, flamingos on the lake.
- Hot springs at the southern end of the park and the lively village of Mto wa Mbu just outside the gate.
How to include Lake Manyara
Manyara sits on the road from Arusha to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, so it's easy to add as a half-day or full-day stop. It also pairs well with a cultural walk or cycling tour in Mto wa Mbu.
