A respectful visit
The Maasai are semi-nomadic pastoralists whose culture is closely tied to their cattle and the land. On a visit to a boma (homestead), you'll be welcomed with song and dance, see inside a traditional house, learn about herding, beadwork and medicinal plants, and have time for questions. We work to make visits respectful and to ensure your entry fee supports the community.
Ways to experience local culture
- Maasai boma visit on the Ngorongoro highlands or near Lake Natron.
- Mto wa Mbu village walk — banana farms, local art, and a taste of village life near Lake Manyara.
- Tanzanian cooking and food — try local dishes like pilau, chapati and ugali.
Photography etiquette
Always ask before taking photos of people. Your guide will help — most hosts are happy to be photographed once you've been introduced.
