Safari from the coast
Mikumi covers around 3,230 km² and borders the vast Nyerere National Park to the south. Its Mkata floodplain is often compared to the Serengeti in miniature, with the Uluguru Mountains forming a dramatic backdrop. If you're starting or ending your trip in Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar, Mikumi is the easiest way to add a real safari.
What you can see
- Elephants, giraffes, zebra, buffalo and wildebeest on the open plains.
- Lions, sometimes resting in trees, plus hyenas and jackals.
- Hippos at the Hippo Pools and excellent birdlife.
Combine it
Combine Mikumi with Nyerere National Park for boat safaris on the Rufiji River, or with a beach stay on Zanzibar.
